With his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine last July, Hugh Jackman has spent nearly 24 years closely associated with the character James “Logan” Howlett. Because of this, it’s hard to imagine anyone else embodying the iconic Wolverine role from the X-Men franchise. Currently, the cinematic landscape is set to experience a “triple threat” with three different actors portraying Logan, including Hugh Jackman, Troye Sivan (the younger Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and Henry Cavill (a variant of Wolverine in the Marvel universe).
Henry Cavill’s transformation into Logan could be seen as a dream come true for many Marvel fans. Since 2020, there have been numerous rumors surrounding the actor taking on the role of Wolverine in the MCU, especially following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox and the rights to the X-Men characters. This could also explain why the producers of Deadpool & Wolverine offered Cavill a minor guest role, as a way to tease the audience after years of anticipation.
However, for Hugh Jackman, Henry Cavill may not be the top choice for the Wolverine role. The actor once shared his thoughts on this topic during an interview with MTV UK in 2015. Jackman mentioned that he would prefer British star Tom Hardy to take on the role of Logan in the event that he “unfortunately” had to step away from the X-Men film franchise. Jackman strongly believes that Hardy would be an excellent choice.
Tom Hardy has gained fame through various roles in projects such as Bronson, Legend, Inception, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, and Peaky Blinders. The actor is also no stranger to the superhero genre, having portrayed the character Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and the character Venom in Sony Pictures’ series.
Tom Hardy will reprise his role as Eddie Brock in the blockbuster Venom: The Last Dance, set to release on October 25. This will be the final film project dedicated to this character, and it remains unclear whether Venom will return in future Sony or Marvel Studios projects. If The Last Dance truly serves as the conclusion for Venom, Tom Hardy might say a heartfelt goodbye to a character he has embodied for six years and is ready to take on new roles, such as Wolverine in the MCU. Some reports indicate that Marvel Studios will begin exploring X-Men characters after the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga in 2016.
