Fans of the iconic series Sex and the City are often captivated by its portrayal of the unique lifestyle of its four leading female characters. Alongside this, the show is known for its many steamy scenes, which leave viewers wondering, “Surely, this can’t be the reality outside of the screen.†However, the truth is that these experiences often stem from real-life events.
According to actress Cynthia Nixon, who portrayed Miranda Hobbes over six seasons of Sex and the City and in the films Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010), the show’s creators had a strict rule that all storylines had to be based on actual experiences from the characters’ lives. This means that the wild escapades of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda, and Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) were often inspired by real events.
Nixon stated, “There were certainly things that were fictional and extravagant in Sex and the City, but the rule in the writers’ room was that no story could be included that didn’t actually happen to someone in the group or to someone they knew. It couldn’t be like, ‘The guy who sells shoes for my brother’s girlfriend’s father.’ Because of that, many outrageous events that are depicted in the show actually took place. They aren’t just random stories.â€
