The man named Jerry Hicks, living in Banner Elk, North Carolina, USA, decided to retire after 56 years as a carpenter, despite never having intended to do so before.
This change came after he unexpectedly won a lottery ticket worth 1 million dollars (about 25 billion VND).
Jerry said that one morning, while going to a convenience store to buy food, he unexpectedly found 20 dollars in the parking lot. When he got into the store, he happily decided to buy a lottery ticket. However, the store only had the Extreme Cash ticket left. Although it wasn’t what he initially intended, Jerry still cheerfully bought that lottery ticket.
Unbelievable luck came to the man.
That evening, after checking the results, Jerry discovered he had won the jackpot of 1 million dollars. According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, the odds of winning the 1 million prize are 1 in 2,017,650. The prize has two options for claiming. One is that the winner receives 50,000 dollars annually for 20 years. The other is a lump sum payment of 600,000 dollars. He chose the lump sum and received 429,007 dollars (about 11 billion VND) after taxes.
After receiving the prize, Jerry stated that he would go to a favorite buffet restaurant and eat all the dishes they have. He further shared that he would set aside a portion of his winnings to help a children’s charity. The remaining amount would be shared with his children and for his retirement.
