Just recently hitting the Vietnamese box office on October 5 and 6 with special screenings, The Wild Robot (original title: The Wild Robot) quickly surpassed “the clown” Joker 2 to claim the top spot. According to Box Office Vietnam data as of 6 PM on October 6, 2024, The Wild Robot has grossed over 2.6 billion VND.
Not only causing a storm in the Vietnamese box office, but the DreamWorks project is also making waves globally. The film has continuously received positive feedback regarding its visuals and quality content from both critics and audiences alike. There are predictions that, given its impressive achievements, The Wild Robot is expected to be a strong contender in the upcoming awards season.
In the US market, The Wild Robot has made a strong impression on the public, earning “sky-high” ratings from international critics. On Metacritic, the film scored 85/100 from critics and 81/100 from audiences, being certified as “globally loved.” Among 36 review sites that evaluated the film, 7 gave The Wild Robot a perfect score of 100/100, with a positive rating of 97%.
Similarly, on Rotten Tomatoes, The Wild Robot received a similar level of acclaim, with both critics and audiences giving it a score of 98% as of October 1, 2024. It is clear that the film is winning the hearts of both sides thanks to its top-notch quality and the high expectations from DreamWorks.
Even strict review sites like IGN could not escape the allure of The Wild Robot, giving the film a score of 8/10. IGN commented: “This is a deeply humanistic film that doesn’t require human characters. A film that brings tears and creates an unpredictable animated adventure.” They also hailed it as a glorious victory for director Chris Sanders, who was behind the success of How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch.
In terms of revenue, The Wild Robot opened with a global box office of $54 million, topping the box office in North America. This figure exceeded earlier predictions and helped The Wild Robot rank among the top 3 animated films with the highest September opening of all time, just behind the first two installments of Hotel Transylvania.
Many renowned review sites such as Slate and Screen Rant have asserted that this is the best animated film of 2024, while Roger Ebert called it one of the finest animated films in the past decade: “One can watch The Wild Robot without sound and still have a great experience. When the sound is turned on, you have one of the best animated films of the decade.” At its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, critics also showered the project with praise and predicted it would be a blockbuster that shakes the global box office. Of course, that has become a reality.
The Wild Robot is adapted from the novel of the same name by Peter Brown. The film follows the journey of Roz – a highly intelligent android who explores and adapts to life on a deserted island after being swept away by a sudden storm. Leaving behind her programmed rules, she learns to harmonize with nature, befriends various animals, and becomes the adoptive mother of an orphaned gosling named Brightbill.
But one day, as Roz enjoys her peaceful days, the robot company begins searching for her and wants to bring her back. Roz and her animal friends must band together to fight against humans to protect the free life they have painstakingly built. Will Roz have the courage and strength to defend the place she has come to call “home”?
The Wild Robot had special screenings on October 5 and 6 and officially premieres on October 11, 2024.
