Author Gege Akutami has concluded their famous shonen series, Jujutsu Kaisen, this year, leaving a significant gap in the catalog of works from Weekly Shonen Jump. While Yuji Itadori and the surviving characters have received a satisfying conclusion, there remain many unanswered questions surrounding other characters after the series ended.
Fortunately, Akutami has been quite open to addressing questions that fans have had for a long time, one of which pertains to Uraume. Clearly, there are many mysteries surrounding Uraume’s gender, and the manga has tackled this question with a surprising answer.
For those who only watch the anime Jujutsu Kaisen and haven’t read the manga, they haven’t seen much of Uraume in action.
Recently, she has taken on a significant role in the second season of the anime through the Shibuya incident arc. As a servant of Sukuna, she possesses a substantial amount of cursed energy that allows her to manipulate a battlefield, creating dangerous offensive and defensive techniques.
In the manga, we have seen this character play a major role in the Culling Game arc, which will be the focal point of the third season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Before the release of the third season, Gege Akutami confirmed Uraume’s gender along with the surprisingly complex background of this character.
The author of Jujutsu Kaisen reveals Uraume’s gender
Akutami stated after discussing Uraume’s current gender and the gender the character held in a previous life: “I intended to address this in volume 27, but I had to go to the hospital and lost my opportunity. Therefore, regarding the name of the Culling Game player, all names will have the same name as when they were still in the womb. This is due to the physical laws of the original host of the Culling Game, not just the cursed energy.” This explains why when Hazenoki is called by his name, he feels somewhat embarrassed when thinking, ‘So that’s the name he will call me?'”
When discussing Uraume’s previous life, Akutami clearly stated the gender of this character before interacting with Kenjaku: “As for Uraume, initially, he was a male, but due to the interaction with Kenjaku, he began to develop in a female form (Himi Shiori)… Have I ever intended to address this in the story?”
