Shanks is one of the most enigmatic characters in One Piece, as the storyline has yet to reveal much about his true intentions. So far in the series, Shanks has appeared in some of the most powerful scenes, showcasing his immense strength and influence, yet he still remains a mystery, particularly regarding the full extent of his abilities as a pirate king.
As we have seen, Shanks used Divine Departure, a signature attack of Roger, to defeat Eustass Kidd. However, the manga does not delve deeper into how Shanks might employ a similar attack as the pirate king himself.
Divine Departure, also known as Godly Avoidance, is a technique that Gol D. Roger used in battle against Kozuki Oden. This is a slicing attack enhanced by channeling Haki into his sword. This attack was strong enough to cut through both of Oden’s swords and send him flying.
Fortunately for One Piece fans, Eiichiro Oda answered 10 important questions during the special edition of Weekly Shonen Jump, and he provided insights into this technique.
The question posed was: “Is the attack Kamusari (Divine Departure) that hits Kid just one attack, or is it an attack that was taught by Roger, or does Shanks have the ability to replicate Roger’s technique?”
Oda replied clearly: “He learned the technique from Roger. Not everyone in Roger’s crew can replicate Shanks’ skills; his talent is truly remarkable.”
Fans of One Piece have discussed the unique techniques associated with Shanks, one of the notable quotes included:
“A striking attack like Divine Departure is not just about cutting the opponent; it also has the ability to send them flying and is nearly impossible to resist.”
“Shanks learned from Roger to the point where he could master such a technique; I find it truly astonishing and admirable.” added another fan.
