Netflix’s One Piece anime project directed by Attack on Titan’s director

In addition to the live-action version, One Piece will have a new anime series on Netflix, and the production team includes key characters from Attack on Titan.

Netflix’s One Piece Anime Project

There are numerous episodes of One Piece, so many that even though it is one of the best anime series of all time, starting to watch it can be quite daunting for newcomers. To address this, Netflix is starting fresh by commissioning Wit Studio to produce a new animated version.

Recently, a special video was unveiled for the anime remake based on the manga, titled “THE ONE PIECE.” The video finally revealed the production team but did not specify when this new project will debut on Netflix.

What is the Name of Netflix’s One Piece Anime Project?

Known as ‘The One Piece’, this film will reimagine Eiichiro Oda’s comic series, modernizing the production process and allowing new fans to start from scratch. A livestream on August 10, 2024, revealed the director and several other creative team members, many of whom have been heavily involved in the Attack on Titan project.

Masashi Koizuka, the storyboard artist for Attack on Titan, is directing this anime. He is joined by lead animators Kyôji Asano and Takatoshi Honda, who have also worked on Attack on Titan and The First Slam Dunk. The assistant director is Hideaki Abe, who has experience with Jujutsu Kaisen. This is clearly a talented team, seasoned and capable of delivering quality products across genres.

During the livestream, Masashi stated that he advocated for this project because no one else at Wit wanted to hang out with Luffy and the Straw Hat crew as much as he did. “I know that I love One Piece the most in this studio, so I took on this project because I didn’t want anyone else to work on it. I will definitely create something exciting. Stay tuned!”, he said.

The story will begin with materials animated for the first time in the late 90s, so they certainly have room to provide an alternative for the loyal fans of the current adaptation. Hopefully, they will succeed.
