LPL Sets a Milestone Not Seen in League of Legends History During the Late Transfer Period of 2024
Currently, while LCK teams are almost finished with their rosters and starting to test new recruits at the KeSPA Cup 2024, LPL seems to be in a “death spiral” with several teams making announcements about parting ways with their players during the end of the 2024 transfer period. This situation inadvertently “helps” LPL set a unique milestone.
With EDG officially parting ways with JieJie, all three LPL teams that have ever won the World Championship no longer have any members contributing to their previous accolades. Although Invictus Gaming is preparing to build a “super team” with the contributions of TheShy and possibly Rookie, it has not yet been officially announced.
This unique milestone from LPL is especially significant as it marks an unprecedented “vacuum” in League of Legends history. For example, as Faker continues to battle for T1, there will always be at least one champion team that still bears the weight of its former glory. Furthermore, even when Faker does not win, it is likely that players like Gumayusi and Oner will take on the “position” he once held.
The Distinct Differences and Evolving Trends in LPL During Each Transfer Season
The absence of any champion team from the World Championship still donning their former titles also highlights two key factors: LPL teams tend to lose their momentum or struggle after achieving success, and the competitive environment has drastically changed in LPL without anyone noticing. While certain players may still be remembered (TheShy, Doinb, Rookie, JackeyLove…), it will be very challenging to replicate past accomplishments.
And after this golden era, LPL seems to be further away from past glories. The 2022 World Championship was a “LCK battlefield,” the 2023 World Championship saw T1 dominate, while the 2024 World Championship will showcase BLG faltering amid iconic moments as a certain Faker has already faced at least two situations like this.
LPL has always been the most powerful region in League of Legends. However, it is currently facing significant challenges for various reasons. The only question remains: when will LPL reclaim its golden era, and whether teams there can regain their competitive edge.
