Henry Cavill had to put in tremendous effort to master the art of sword fighting, especially since his character has a sword fight with Vilgefortz in Season 3 of The Witcher. It is Cavill’s swordsmanship in The Witcher that has inspired Mackenyu’s fight scenes in the One Piece live-action.
Mackenyu’s portrayal of Roronoa Zoro in the live-action adaptation of One Piece has received praise from audiences, particularly for his smooth fight scenes that have been highly appreciated by viewers.
As seen, One Piece live-action Season 1 has been very successful. The show has broken the anime adaptation curse, and Season 2 is currently in production.
While each actor has perfectly portrayed their roles, it is Mackenyu’s portrayal of the pirate hunter that has made the film much more engaging. In the visually stunning fight scenes featuring the Straw Hat Pirates, Zoro’s swordsmanship is at an entirely different level.

Marc Jobst emphasized that the fewer cuts in a fight scene, the more viewers can appreciate the beauty of the action. The action scenes on the One Piece set were shot in a very special way, requiring the production team to prepare specific filming equipment.
Additionally, the actors needed to perform well and have the physical strength to carry out many dangerous stunts on their own. They also had to memorize their moves so that the director could film long, smooth takes simultaneously. A long take can keep the camera rolling and move around the action, delivering visually stunning sequences. The cinematographers would also leverage their skills to capture the movements smoothly.
Mackenyu Faces Challenges Due to Lack of Guidance from Eiichiro Oda
There is no denying that the One Piece live-action series has succeeded because Eiichiro Oda played a crucial role in the production process.
However, this did not make things easier for the actors on set. The lack of guidance from Oda-Sensei for the actors made their tasks more challenging. In an exclusive interview with Cosmopolitan, Mackenyu shed light on how this lack of direction from the creator pushed him to work harder for his role.
He said: “It would have been much easier if he had given me tips and specific details on what to do with Zoro, but he didn’t. That made things difficult.”
Although this made it challenging for the actors on set, it allowed them, especially Mackenyu, to have their own interpretation of the character, creating a unique portrayal while still respecting the source material.
