Former World Champion Doinb Speaks on the Declining Popularity of League of Legends
Recently on his streaming channel, Doinb, one of the most renowned League of Legends players, expressed his disappointment about the current state of the game, stating that the viewership is alarmingly low. It’s worth noting that just last year, before this “disappearance” phase, Doinb was one of the most watched players in the LPL, even surpassing TheShy in audience engagement.
During his peak streaming times, Doinb had viewership numbers exceeding 100k—much higher than many professional League of Legends tournaments, especially in major regions. However, according to Newsqq, his current viewership has decreased nearly tenfold compared to before.
Doinb himself acknowledged this decline, stating: “League of Legends here (LPL) is dying. The game stream is still quite fun, but people just don’t want to watch. Not only me, but even Uzi and Ning have switched to PUBG. I might start streaming half League of Legends, half PUBG soon.”
The Realities of Doinb and League of Legends in the LPL
In reality, PUBG has seen a strong development in recent years, especially among younger audiences, but it still lags behind League of Legends in terms of community scale. The fact is that once a player has completed their game sessions, or followed their favorite tournaments, very few are left to watch League of Legends live streams.
Furthermore, Doinb must take some responsibility for the viewership drop. During the golden era, he “disappeared” for an indefinite time. Viewers simply drifted away from Doinb and shifted to other channels.
Moreover, at this current time, the competitive tournaments have yet to regain their former glory, and the environment is also quite challenging. As a result, viewers prefer to spend their time experiencing games directly rather than watching live streams. The number of viewers for League of Legends streams has drastically decreased during this period. Unless we are talking about “view-stealing” players like TheShy or T1, it seems that attracting viewers’ attention during this time is becoming increasingly difficult.
