Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Continues the Main Story by Introducing Yhwach, the Quincy King
He awakens after a thousand years since his “death.” To obtain the immense power of himself, Yhwach will use a technique called “Auswählen,” which allows him to absorb the strength from every Quincy currently alive.
This technique has already taken the powers of Ichigo and Uryu, but not all Quincies are dead. For many years, this has been a major plot point, but Tite Kubo has finally revealed the reason for it. In a fansite called Klub Outside, Kubo answered a new question shared on October 21, 2024.
The question on page 689 of the website is: “Regarding the phenomenon of the late-Quincy era, Bambies and Buzzbee continue to use the infused symbols and there are no signs that the power of the elderly Quincy is diminishing. Considering that the elderly Quincy must have received their infusion before, and the essence of power is essential at the time of occurrence.”
Creator Kubo responded to this question that: “The essence of power must be taken from the elderly and weak Quincies, in order of occurrence. Additionally, Bazz-B and the girls still exist; the power of the core must still be high. Therefore, the ability to protect before Auswählen is inherently high, leading to the ‘diminishment’ of power.”
A Twitter/X account dedicated to the Bleach series shared this information:
“We have finally reached a point where we can answer. I think my speculation about Uryu’s power being absorbed by Jugram while being weakened makes sense.”
“This was quite apparent to me when the new manga was released, but every person stated that Auswählen does not uniformly weaken elderly Quincies like Robert or Uryu’s mother and weakens stronger individuals like Masaki, who just died because of Grand Fisher,” another person shared.
Another fan added: “Thank you for addressing this because I always wondered why Auswählen does not uniformly apply. This answer is quite satisfying.”
But why doesn’t “Auswählen” affect Ichigo, Yuzu, and Karin? It’s because Ichigo is not a pure Quincy. According to the Old Man, Quincy power is just a part of the overall strength of the core, while Zangetsu (Shinigami + Hollow) is the primary strength of Ichigo.
As for Yuzu and Karin, the explanation is quite similar. They are not fully Quincy; they also possess another strength within them, and the Auswählen technique cannot affect them.
We do not know exactly what Yuzu and Karin inherited from their parents. We know that Ichigo inherited White from Masaki, and that is the combination of Hollow and Shinigami powers he possesses. However, based on what we know, Karin and Yuzu must at least have Shinigami and Quincy powers but do not have Hollow powers.
