The manga Jujutsu Kaisen is set to conclude in September 2024, with the final two chapters, 29 and 30, scheduled for release on December 25, 2024. These chapters will include several additional illustrations and a 16-page epilogue focusing on Nobara Kugisaki, Yuko Ozawa, Panda, and Uraume.
One of the additional illustrations has revealed significant insights into the relationship between Sukuna and Yuji. Sukuna, despite being the main antagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, remains a mysterious figure. The manga has only hinted at his defeat due to the combined strength of sorcerers during the Heian Era, but we have never received any detailed information about the circumstances of his downfall.
The Heian Era is often referred to as the golden age of sorcery, and Sukuna was known to have dominated during this period. Moreover, we still do not know his true name. Ryomen Sukuna is merely a title bestowed upon him, meaning “King of Curses.” It is possible that Sukuna has never had a personal name because he is a cursed spirit. Sukuna is also a twin, which explains some of his unique characteristics. He consumed his twin brother in the womb to avoid dying, and his twin’s spirit has wandered through many realms since.
Chapter 257 of Jujutsu Kaisen reveals a significant misunderstanding regarding Sukuna’s relationship with Yuji’s family.
The additional illustrations in the final chapter clarify the relationship between Sukuna and Wasuke Itadori.
The illustrations in the last chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen include the contrasting portraits of Wasuke Itadori and Sukuna, with a note stating: “To be precise, he is not Itadori’s father, but rather his grandfather, who shares a spirit with him. We are somewhat alike, aren’t we?”
In Chapter 257 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Sukuna recalls his origins and speaks about how his twin brother’s spirit has been wandering through various realms until it formed a bond with Kenjaku, an individual who has been using cursed techniques for over 1000 years. From Sukuna’s words, we understand that Jin Itadori is the manifestation of his twin brother’s spirit, while Jin’s mother, Kaori Itadori, has been held captive by Kenjaku.
Chapter 143 describes a brief interaction involving Jin and Kaori (who has been taken by Kenjaku). Wasuke—Yuji’s grandfather—warns Jin about the “hidden dangers” if he doesn’t survive. Both father and son are aware of Kaori’s impending fate.
However, the latest chapters confirm that the relationship between Sukuna and Yuji has been misunderstood. Wasuke and Sukuna share a slight connection, a detail that has only recently been revealed. This connection becomes even more apparent when Wasuke is alone, creating a strange impression with Sukuna.
While the manga has resolved this misunderstanding, there remains an element that is difficult to comprehend.
Could the revelations in the final chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen cause Yuji’s family to face greater challenges?
If Wasuke truly is the manifestation of Sukuna’s twin brother in Jujutsu Kaisen, then Sukuna’s comments regarding his brother’s connection with Kenjaku could be misleading. It might be a misinterpretation, or Sukuna could have misunderstood the situation. However, in Chapter 157, it is clear that the King of Curses is speaking about Jin Itadori. Kenjaku has taken Kaori’s body to create a perfect vessel for Sukuna, and his plans have succeeded.
Despite this, Wasuke’s identity may prove beneficial at this pivotal moment, helping to clarify the misunderstandings surrounding this family. Wasuke seems to understand everything that is happening. He does not exhibit any signs of being a cursed spirit, but he is aware of his existence. It is possible that Wasuke knows that someone is using an ancient curse to dominate Kaori’s body. Unfortunately, Jujutsu Kaisen has not yet clarified much about Wasuke, so even his relationship with Kenjaku remains unknown.
