Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks have announced that Jim Mickle, the creator of the acclaimed animated series “Sweet Tooth,” will serve as the writer and director for the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Mobile Suit” – a franchise that is emblematic of science fiction and mecha genres.
Recently, Deadline reported on the appointment of Mickle, who has collaborated with Legendary and Bandai Namco on a project that has generated significant interest among fans of the franchise. The live-action film is set to begin production in Hollywood in 2025.
While the storyline for this live-action adaptation has yet to be revealed, the choice of Mickle has sparked a variety of opinions among fans regarding the unique style and approach he may bring compared to what audiences have been anticipating. Initially, in 2021, the project was handed over to director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known for “Kong: Skull Island,” in collaboration with Netflix. However, it has since been confirmed that both Vogt-Roberts and Netflix will not be involved in the current version, raising questions and speculation about the direction of this adaptation.
Since its debut in Japan in 1979, “Mobile Suit” has remained relevant and has been adapted into numerous anime series, OVAs, and animated films, becoming a cornerstone of Japanese pop culture. This will mark the first time the franchise is transformed into a large-scale live-action film, creating new opportunities for engagement within the global fan community.
The decision to pursue this project reflects Legendary’s ongoing interest in adapting Japanese animated works for a broader audience, similar to what has been achieved with other iconic franchises such as Godzilla and Pacific Rim.
Upon the announcement, immediate reactions from the fan community highlighted concerns and skepticism about how characters and beloved elements will translate into the Hollywood version.
One commenter expressed concern: “Some characters are definitely going to be altered, as is the Hollywood rule. I remember the Gundam movies being sold at TSUTAYA.”
“Hollywood is going to make the robots look more appealing due to AI, and then the heroes will end up wiping them out to save the city.”, another user noted.
