One of the iconic authors of Shueisha is collaborating with this publishing house once again, with a one-shot manga set to debut soon on Shonen Jump+. This collaboration comes as Shueisha has undergone several changes this year, particularly as the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is set to conclude some of its popular series in 2024.
This weekly magazine is evolving in a way that will also impact its other major publications by Shueisha, as well as various other magazines and schedules that will change next year. Fortunately, every issue is prepared to introduce a new perspective and story.
Shueisha is also collaborating with several notable authors from the past, including Norihiro Yagi, the creator of Claymore and Angel Densetsu, who has been revealed to be working on a completely new one-shot manga in the upcoming Jump+ update.
According to a discovery by @WSJ_manga on X, Yagi will return with a new one-shot titled “Mukuro to Kishi,” which will be released on December 7 in Japan. The English version has not yet been announced for this release date.
Norihiro Yagi and Shueisha
Norihiro Yagi has previously worked with Shueisha on two main series. The first was Angel Densetsu in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This series revolves around a boy who is misunderstood due to his frightening appearance, despite having no experience or intention of fighting. However, his looks lead to constant trouble throughout the story. Yet, the antics of the character turn him into a romantic figure for the surrounding community.
Claymore debuted shortly after that in 2001 and was featured in the Monthly Shonen Jump magazine of Shueisha, just like Angel Densetsu. This series remains Yagi’s longest and most notable work. It tells the story of a group of female warriors known as “Claymores,” created to protect humanity from monstrous creatures.
This work is one of the most enduring dark fantasy adventures that Shueisha has published, reflecting many aspects of life and the tragic fates of its main characters. Now, Yagi is returning to Shueisha with a new one-shot that could potentially evolve into a full series in the future.
Will this One-Shot Succeed?
Unfortunately, there are currently no detailed announcements regarding how “Mukuro to Kishi” will be received or what it will entail. The hints in the promotional segments of Jump+ suggest a tone similar to Claymore, making it appealing to a slightly older audience.
It should be noted that there have been successful hits recently in the magazine such as Dandadan, Kaiju No. 8, and Chainsaw Man Part 2… Series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, along with the recent Kagurabachi, have all shifted the narrative direction of Shueisha towards darker themes in various ways.
The indications show that the editorial team is evolving. If this one-shot strikes the right chord, it could very well develop into a complete series in the near future.
