Gen.G can only blame themselves
Remember, after successfully recruited Kiin and Canyon, many fans of this team were extremely excited. Many opinions suggested that Gen.G had filled the weaknesses of Doran – Peanut from before. But all this lineup has accomplished in the past year is 1 LCK trophy and 1 MSI trophy. That is too little.
After Gen.G was eliminated from , many people believe that the reigning MSI champions 2024 would find it hard to maintain this “all-star” lineup. However, in reality, they shouldn’t have needed the 2024 World Championship to feel secure financially. Because after MSI 2024 ended, teams had the opportunity to participate in the Esports World Cup in Saudi Arabia. The only thing is, Gen.G has “self-destructed” again.
Because, the initial announced prize money for this tournament for the League of Legends championship alone reached 400k USD (nearly 560 million VND). The MVP would receive an additional 50k USD (nearly 70 million won). This amount is only slightly less than the World Championship. Notably, this prize money was later increased and actually surpassed the prize money of a World Championship.
Of course, the World Championship will still be more important because it is Riot’s largest official tournament of the year. But at least, with the prize money that Gen.G could have received, they could cover some of the salary losses and operational costs throughout the year. And like a “curse,” Gen.G continued to fail in the two tournaments they participated in, namely the 2024 Summer LCK and the 2024 World Championship.
Gen.G faces the situation of losing “everything”
At this moment, Gen.G is facing countless difficulties. The question of who to keep and who to let go is not easy to answer. But when letting go of any star, how they can fill that position is also a tricky problem since the current Gen.G lineup can be said to have some of the best players in each position in the Korean League of Legends scene.
Keeping them would lead to issues with operational funding and salary caps, while finding replacements may not guarantee competitive success. Gen.G is in a dilemma that they themselves have not taken advantage of every opportunity in the past year.
