Fans of Black Myth: Wukong are likely experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions in recent days.
Initially, there was joy as Game Science’s blockbuster made it to four nominations at The Game Awards, including the prestigious Game of the Year award. However, immediately after, the nominations of various DLCs and remake games have left fans of Black Myth: Wukong feeling increasingly uncertain and less optimistic, as it’s clear that Game Science’s product faces significant challenges in competing for Game of the Year this year due to several factors.
This argument is further supported by a recent statistic showing that Black Myth: Wukong has set a record that leaves its fans both amused and disappointed.
Specifically, Black Myth: Wukong has become the game with the lowest score in history nominated for the Game of the Year category. The game’s score is only 81 on Metacritic. In fact, 100% of other games ever nominated for Game of the Year have scored significantly higher than Black Myth: Wukong. Some “close contenders” include Control and A Plague Tale: Requiem, both of which achieved a score of 82 on Metacritic. When compared to this year’s nominees, Black Myth: Wukong has even less chance.
Black Myth: Wukong’s score even falls short compared to some indie titles like Stray and other blockbusters like Resident Evil Village, The Outer Worlds, PUBG, and Hearthstone. Nevertheless, fans of Black Myth: Wukong still have reasons to be cheerful, as many higher-rated games in 2024, such as Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth (89), Silent Hill 2 Remake, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Helldivers 2, Persona 3 Reload, and even Dragon Age: The Veilguard, have received higher ratings yet still missed out on the shortlist for Game of the Year.
However, the odds are quite slim for Black Myth: Wukong to win this prestigious award. The mere fact that Game Science’s title is included in the final nominations is largely attributed to its significant commercial success, but it’s clear that sales figures are not an accurate measure of the ultimate quality.
