The manga Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami has officially concluded as of September 30, 2024, with chapter 271 titled “From Now On.” This chapter features characters Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki as they investigate individuals using cursed techniques to harm the general public. At this point, Satoru Gojo might be able to broker peace for those in the profession and his students.
Introduction to Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen was first introduced on March 5, 2018. This shounen manga began to capture the attention of many fans when the anime adaptation was released in 2020. In addition to its compelling content, Jujutsu Kaisen has been a success partly due to the high-quality animation style of Studio MAPPA, which has left many viewers in awe.
In fact, the manga has been known for its supernatural themes and dark tone, incorporating different story ideas that are uncommon in typical shounen narratives. Moreover, fans are fond of the characters introduced and the emotional depth of each character’s background that is consistently woven throughout the storyline.
Unfortunately, Gege Akutami has reached a significant turning point that could have been used to build a deeper narrative, particularly with Yuji being the main character, given the strong presence of other characters over time.
Details That Left Fans Disappointed in Jujutsu Kaisen
1. Many Character Deaths That Were Disheartening
Starting from the Shibuya Incident arc to the Culling Game arc and the Shinjuku Showdown arc, fans had to prepare themselves mentally for the deaths of beloved characters. This is due to the significant battles that lead to the demise of numerous individuals.
Regrettably, excessive character deaths and their continuous occurrences created a sense of contention among the fans. There are indeed many characters whose endings were notably disappointing.
One such character is Yuki Tsukumo, the only female sorcerer in the group of four. She was swiftly killed by Kenjaku, rendering her character’s development meaningless.
Besides Yuki, other characters such as Toge Inumaki, Panda, Uraume, Kinji Hikari, and Satoru Gojo also faced tragic ends.
2. Deaths That Shouldn’t Have Happened
One of Yuji’s closest friends, Megumi, has endured numerous hardships until the conclusion of Jujutsu Kaisen. He fought with the intention of creating a world where his sister Tsumiki could live. Unfortunately, everything changed after Sukuna killed Tsumiki. He not only lost his desire to continue fighting but also lost the will to live.
Megumi also faced severe trauma as he witnessed many lives being lost when Sukuna took control of him. Eventually, Megumi managed to struggle through and survive.
3. The Tragic Fate of a Character That Was Underexplored
In the JJK universe, the manifestation of cursed energy is introduced as the highest-grade technique. The users of jujutsu are required to have a significantly high amount of cursed energy to utilize it effectively.
This technique is the highest level among all other cursed techniques, and not many characters can achieve this. However, towards the end of the manga, there were some elements of the cursed energy that had yet to be fully explored. The main characters that are associated with this are Yuji, Kenjaku, Ryu Ishigori, and Uro Takako.
4. Kenjaku’s Role as a Villain
Kenjaku is the mastermind behind the entire series of events in the JJK universe. In reality, this sorcerer has been plotting for a long time before Yuji even stepped into the jujutsu world.
Kenjaku appears to be one of the oldest characters in the narrative, having utilized his unique techniques to achieve his goals. He is also the one who introduced the concept of jujutsu sorcery to the main characters in a much broader sense than what was previously anticipated.
However, Kenjaku’s motives throughout the story remain ambiguous as the main characters have yet to witness the true extent of his actions. Kenjaku dies after receiving a fatal blow from Yuta Okkotsu, following an encounter with Fumihiko Takaba just before his demise.
5. Yuji Never Realized Kenjaku Was His “Parent”
One key point that left fans disappointed with the narrative of JJK until its final moments is that Yuji never realized that Kenjaku was his “parent.”
Previously, there was scattered information regarding Yuji’s mother, Kaori Itadori, who was one of Kenjaku’s vessels. Kaori was married to Jin Itadori, who turns out to be a reincarnation of Sukuna’s twin brother, the very person Sukuna devoured when both were still in their mother’s womb.
From the relationship between Kaori and Jin, Yuji was born, and he later became the vessel for Sukuna.
The bond between Kenjaku and Yuji is quite complex, yet it remains unclear what Kenjaku truly intends to make Yuji into.
6. Ultimately, Yuji’s Authority as the Main Character in a Shounen Narrative Is Undermined
From the very beginning, Yuji Itadori was introduced as the primary character of JJK. However, fans have often anticipated more thrilling actions from Yuji, similar to those of other main characters in various shounen series.
Unfortunately, Yuji’s authority became overshadowed by another character, namely Gojo. Despite the fact that the jujutsu sorcery techniques were at their peak, Yuji still had no other chance to fully demonstrate his capabilities.
In terms of character development and portrayal, Yuji’s appearance is quite memorable. However, fans desired much more from him than what was presented.
